Manx Museum

This large and well presented national museum depicts the islands natural history, archaeology and social development with examples of famous Manx artists. Manx Museum originally opened on November 2nd 1922 and included artefacts from a temporary museum in Castle Rushen, from storage in Peel, and from well known island preservation societies.

To celebrate the centenary of the Museum and Ancient Monuments Trustees, a redesign of the internal building and a large extension to accommodate an Introduction Theatre, National Art Gallery and Map Gallery was completed in 1989 and opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann.

Museum visitors are welcomed and presented with a guide for the museum and shown into the Film Theatre to watch an evocative film on the "Story of Mann" and major events in Manx history. Afterwards The National Art Gallery can be enjoyed where a fine series of gallery displays enhance the stimulating and memorable Manx Museum experience. The Manx Museum offers an interactive experience allowing visitors to sample visual and audio exhibits items of their interest. Many of the exhibition rooms have interactive material specifically designed for children.

Entry is free to the Manx Museum, parking close by is available and additional facilities include an elegant cafe and large Heritage Shop. Offering something for all ages, the Manx Museum's aim is to provide an exciting starting point from which to further explore the Isle of Mans unique Manx heritage throughout the Island. Therefore this would make a good tourist attraction to visit towards the start of your Isle of Man holiday.
