The House of Manannan
Peel, Isle of Man
Sitting by the harbour in the village of Peel in a large complex, partly of the
old Peel Railway Station, The House of Manannan museum was built in 1997 at a cost
of £5.5 million. An excellent Museum for all ages it uses state-of-the-art display
techniques to explore Celtic, Viking and Maritime traditions of the Isle of Man
and presents the dramatic story of the Island's history. Bringing to life both ancient
and modern themes, the museum encourages the visitor to explore the richness of
the Manx landscape in further detail after their visit here.
Declared British Museum of the Year and given an award by the Society for the Interpretation
of Britain's Heritage, the many interactive sections offer amusement for young or
old and you will need to spend an afternoon there to see everything. Inside the
award-winning building, which is based upon Manx vernacular architecture, are many
exhibits such as a replica Norse long ship, made and sailed from Norway to the Isle
of Man in 1979. Other features include: Odin's Raven, Movie Presentation on Manx
Crosses, Stage Presentation in a Celtic Roundhouse, Chronicles of Man Exhibition,
Viking Longboat, a children's outside Play Area, History of Fishing Exhibition,
Maritime Past Interactive Films, Ships of Mann Exhibition and Isle of Man - Uncovering
the Past and Saving for the Future.
The House of Manannan provides an exciting introduction to St Patrick's Isle, while
'Manannan's Tour of Peel Castle' provides each visitor to the Castle with a personal
electronic guide.
