Moore's Traditional Museum
Peel, Isle of Man
The Isle of Man has a long history of herring curing and was first seen on the island
in the 1870's. Since then the original and famous Manx Kippers have been smoked
in buildings around the island. Established in 1882, Moore's of Peel is a factory
situated beside the River Neb that took herring from harbour boats to process them.
At one time the factory had over 150 people working there, soaking the fish in salt,
placing them on racks before they were hung in large chimneys to be smoked. These
original factory chimneys are stilled used today as Moore's continues the tradition
of producing real Manx Kippers although their produce range has extended to include
smoking bacon.
The family business and working factory offer excellent 40
minute tours which take visitors through the entire kipper making process. There
is also a shop next to the factory which offers a variety of fresh sea food.
