Laxey
A picturesque village located on the east coast of the Island between
Ramsey and
Douglas, Laxey is best known for its large waterwheel
'Laxey Wheel'. The village
takes its name from the Norse word for Salmon River 'laxa' due to its past as a
thriving fishing village. Today Laxey is mainly a residential and tourist area,
the Laxey Mines were the deepest mines in the world during the 1800's, and the
Laxey Wheel was used to pump water out of the mines.
