Groudle Glen Railway
Douglas, Isle of Man
Owned by the Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters' Association and operated entirely
by volunteers, Groudle Glen Railway was originally built in the 1890's and has been
restored since the 1980's. The first section of the line was re-opened for public
passenger trains in 1986 and in 1992 train services were extended to the original,
rebuilt station at Sea Lion Rocks.
Situated approx. 2 miles from Douglas, a variety of trains operate during the year
from Lhen Coan, the main station, to the terminus at Sea Lion Rocks. The railway
runs about one and a half miles on 2 foot track from inside a beautiful glen towards
the coast and is a perfect way to enjoy the stunning Isle of Man scenery. In service
are 2 Steam locomotives, 2 diesel locomotives and a battery operated Polar Bear.
Trains run on Sundays from April to September, on Wednesday evenings during July
and August and on Tuesday evenings in August.
At Sea Lion Rocks station there is a cafe staffed by volunteers providing hot drinks,
light snacks, souvenirs, sweets and ice creams and cool drinks. On the platform
at Lhen Coan station there is a small shop selling train related souvenirs, 'Thomas
the Tank' and 'Ivor the Engine' products and a full range of locos, stock and track
from Accucraft and Peco available at very keen prices.
