Very nice Victorian grandeur in a spot that is convenient for the Business district of Douglas. One of the best hotel breakfasts I have had in a long time - the grilled Manx kippers are a must. The atrium area is very nicely done and Sir Norman's next door is a very convenient bolt hole for between meetings.

From the moment I entered the reception, I was very impressed with the Hotel. The receptionist was very polite and helpful. The room was superb with a big spacious bathroom. I liked the fact that there was no noise near the room and I had a very paceful nights sleep. I did spent a fe minutes in the Atrium garden and enjoyed it very much.

Myself and my Partner really loved our stay at the hotel for our 1st Anniversary my request for Champagne was in the room when we arrived which was fantastic. The Breakfast was excellent and a great way to start the day. The only complaint we would have was the noise from a room at the other end of the atrium which sounded as though they were having a late night party and kept us awake for 2 and half hours until I spotted a member of staff looking up towards the balcony but this wasnt until around 4am and the noise had begun at around 1-1.30am. Apart from that as I said before our stay was fantastic.

Stayed in a deluxe atrium room on the 4th floor which was clean, spacious and comfortable. The balcony was large with a good view of the atrium. The only negatives would be the corner shower was a little small although there was a bath with an additional shower attached and as with most hotels I've stayed in you only ever seem to get a very limited amount of tissue paper in the bathroom.

The public areas are looking tired now from former glory days. Reception on booking in was efficient and we were in our room swiftly. Again though comfortable it wasnt particularly modern apart from the bathroom which was large by modern standards and very clean. Breakfast was good. The bar area was modern and the staff on a busy Christmas weekend were very attentive. One little issue with reception was when I asked for Toilet rolls and water to be put in the room it wasn't and no notification of a problem with the hot water on Saturday evening. Overall not bad for the price paid. Would return

Just not what one would expect from a 4 star. Bar was cold, dreary and unwelcoming. Room with balcony onto atrium was spacious but got stuffy as there were no outside windows and ventilation in bathroom inadequate. Shower cubicle was tiny and had mould. Pool was very small but OK as I was the only guest swimming but beware, it only holds a small number of people at one time. Staff on reception and at breakfast were very helpful and freindly.

Hard to believe there was not a room with a better view than I was provided with. Noisy pigeons kept me awake and shower went on and off and hot and cold intermittently for second visit running. Have been a regular visitor but likely to stay somewhere else on next trip. Would have provided these views on check-out but no-one ever asks 'how was your stay?'

Overall we enjoy the Sefton and have stayed a number of times, this last visit was very mixed. Room good, but then we paid the extra to have good room. Sir Norman's bar, most of the tables with Reserved signs and made to feel unwelcome for requesting a table to eat at. Food good. Jaccuzi out or order, shower in gents chamging out of order. Requested to move car on Sunday evening for some maintenance, but on returning car nothing had been done and many cars not moved. Breakfast on Sunday, very poor most selection cooked food had run out and one by one they got replaced I would think took 30 minutes to have been able to have one of each selection, as it was had to do without, fried egg, tomotoe, beans and a long wait for bacon, very poor.

22 November 2011
show extended ratings▼ | Overall | | | Cleanliness | | | Location | | | Rooms | | | Service | | | Value | |
I would like to say that although the room was clean and tidy, it was in need of some upgrade or repair, for instance the doors to the veranda were very difficult to fathom out how to open and close and required all of the bolts on each section of door to be unlocked to be able to open the main doors and also the same to be able to close them again having to line up the latch to be able to then pull them all closed. The window to the side of the bed was an outside window and it was quite noisy late at night and early morning. Finally the bathroom could do with a bigger shower, but this is my own preference, however the curtains do not close fully so water is sprayed out and if you dropped the soap then you need to be double jointed to pick it up again or half step out of the shower with the curtain clinging to your body. The water fluctuates warm, hot and cold also. As for the silicon sealing around the shower tray then this should be dug out and resealed with new sealant as the current one is black with age. Apart from that the stay was comfortable and welcoming and I would use the hotel again as I have done in the past. Thank you.

Overall, a fair hotel which I was told by a taxi driver is the best in Douglas. I would stay there again but only because it is the best, not because the staff did anything to make my stay memorable. Reception staff were particularly lacklustre in their attention and made no attempt to go the extra mile. Newspapers were late on both mornings I stayed becuase the hotel did not send out for them early enough.

I've used this hotel many times over the last 5 years and noticed a real decline on my last visit, which is such a shame. Atrium rooms looking tired, wi fi connection unworkable, pool area dirty and unkempt, poor selection of tv channels and the breakfast was so bad the last time I was there, I didn't bother this time (so they may have improved). To make matters worse, there was no hot water for a shower on my last day. I'm giving it 2 stars out of nostalgia (I initially put 1 star) because the hotel used to be really good and the only business hotel I would stay in on the island. Unfortunately, the prices haven't changed but the quality has been allowed to drop significantly. As I said at the outset, a real shame to see a great hotel in decline.

I was brought up on the Island and thus know the Sefton well. I do like the way you have approached the Atrium - clever and effective (although my balcony area was somewhat battered and worn). Anyway, I think you've done well to pull an old hotel into today's expectations and have awarded a slightly higher rating as a result. One complaint is the laundry service - I used this only as I had a couple of drops of olive oil on a shirt. The laundry contractors completely ignored this and they were still present, only larger of course, on return. Once home I simply sprayed some stain remover and washed normally and the shirt is now as good as new.

Hello, First time I've provided a hotel review but I was disappointed with The Sefton: - Telephone didn't work. I asked the waiter who brought my room service-he suggested I ask reception and quickly left. - I didn't receive my wake up call per above. - The wi-fi was very slow and with the limited tv options I couldn't watch anything online. - The shower was luke warm the next morning; also, I'm no giant but the shower was very small and uncomfortable. - I mentioned the phone to the reception staff; they smiled and said it would be looked at but no apology - simple customer service! It's a beautiful hotel and the food was excellent but a disappointing experience and with my regular business trips to the Isle of Man I don't intend staying there again. Hope this is acted on. My name is Lorcan Hall and I stayed in room 275 on October 11th. Regards.

We stayed in the Royal Suite which was fantastic. We appreciated the ability that this afforded us to dine in. either modestly with produce bought locally or on room service from Sir Norman's. The Gallery restaurant was also a very nice experience offering opportunities to sample something just that little bit different.Breakfast in the Harris Restaurant overlooking the promenade was a great way to start each day. Service throughout our stay whether at the front desk or in the restaurants was attentive but never intrusive.

Excellent location.
The reception staff are friendly & helpful and the parking, though tight, is very useful.
Sir Norman's bar has friendly staff and serves good food and excellent Guinness.
However, the Atrium rooms, while having nice balconies, have the worst showers that I have
experienced in 25 yrs of staying at 4 star hotels.
They are tiny and have inadequate shower curtains which allow water to spill onto the floor of the bathroom.
Probably difficult to change but it would be better to put a shower screen around the bath.
The Breakfast room had a distinct end of season feel - but the hotel wasn't closing:
Unhappy East European staff on the first day and on the second day a waitress from Malta with very limited English,
who should take the cooked order when you arrive so you don't have to wait too long for it to be cooked,
On both mornings the fruit in the buffet looked old -
pineapple going brown, and orange & melon which was beginning to ferment.
the Coffee served was variable sometimes right sometimes far too strong.
To end on a high note - the kippers were delicious.

Our room 470 was spacious and well equipped for our needs. The foliage growing all over the balcony railings was far to much and the smell from it was very unpleasant. Because of the amount of foliage covering the railings there was no way to view the delightful Atrium whilst sitting on the balcony.
The Gallery restaurant was superb, food was excellent and the service was first class.
Drinks in Sir Norman's Bar were very pricey and the service not up to a four star standard.
Breakfast in the Harris room was civilized the only criticism here was the l o n g wait for cooked breakfast replenishments once certain foodstuffs had been consumed.

A very impressive building, cleverly designed with the atrium and gardens, very peaceful & relaxing. Our stay was generally good but for a couple of things to note.
We had chosen an inside suite with atrium balcony to be away from the traffic noise, but the quiet calm was upset every morning at 6am by the mostly foreign staff chattering loudly and going about their business without regard for the residents still sleeping. This came to a head on the Thursday morning when the hotel hosted a business breakfast reception in the Atrium, which was being set up from 6am with tables being dragged in, trolleys of cups and crockery rattling past, all echoing around the atrium open space it felt like it was in your room!
Also during our 3 days stay our room didn't get serviced, despite leaving at 10am and returning 3.30pm. We had to go in search of housekeeping to get tea & coffee supplies and toilet roll! We were offered service at this point, but as we had returned to our room this would have been inconvenient for us.
The buffet breakfast was of good quality and choice, however there was often a queue and wait for items to be replenished that had run out.

We enjoyed our stay very much, our room was excellant and we loved the sea views. Our only complaint with the room was the lack of drawer space. We had meals both in normans bar and the Gallery, the food in the bar was very mediocre whereas the gallery food was excellant but very expensive.

I have stayed at the Sefton on a number of occasions and find it a very pleasant place to base oneself. The bar serves good food and proper beer and the restauarant is excellent. The choice at breakfast is also very good. I have two minor criticisms - the room was too hot and there was little which could be done about it and the swimming pool was too cold (same as last time).

Staff were very helpful and polite.

We stayed in the Churchill suite which was fine, plenty of space and good facilities, enjoyed the multimedia options.
The weekend was spoilt by the hotel not offering an option for dinner on Sunday evening. The bar was fully booked and residents were not prioritised. Duty manager was unable to offer a solution. Room information booklet was incorrect.
The car parking was inadequate and exhaust fumes fill the atrium, not pleasant.
Service in the main restaurant was good when it was open.

The location of the hotel is excellent at the promenade, and our room had a interesting view over the winter garden. The breakfast was quite nice with a perfect view over the promenade and sea, but we experienced a somewhat limited choice of bread (coarse) and vegetables (tomatoes, cucombers ). The tiny bottles of soap and champoo shouldn´t be in a first class hotel bathroom. It didn´t impress us.
However, the staff was generally very nice and professional.

We visited the Isle of man to attend a family wedding and found the Sefton Hotel to be perfectly located for our needs.
Unfortunately however, our room had no view whatsoever and overlooked a small square area which seemed to house maintenance items eg ladders and tarpauline etc, which made it extremely noisy when it rained and the window was open. The room was incredibly hot which required us to have the window open at all times.
The shower curtain in the bathroom was of no use whatsoever which resulted in the entire bathroom floor being flooded each time the shower was used. Thus making it extremely dangerous and a H&S issue.

First stay was not planned, came on the off chance there was a room, but because of this first stay we keep coming back, good location, rooms great, food excellent, service second to none and the staff are genuinely friendly, my wife thinks the place is wonderful so doesn't want go any where else, however things may change. The price of the rooms is the most disapointing, cost keeps going up, especially at TT time when we come every year, so maybe nows the time for a change. I know costs rise but at the most busy time, I feel they are taking advantage of the fact that people need rooms, so I may look for other hotels, B/B's on the island or might just give it a miss for a while.

Dear Sir/Madam,
As per usual we had a fantastic time at your hotel. However I do have a couple of points to make.
The size of the bathroom in suite 106 is smaller than the others in which we have stayed. I know we are only dealing in a few pounds, but to charge exactly the same price for a suite that is smaller than the other suites seems a bit strange to me.
Secondly, we did put clear instructions on the room service breakfast form. However it seems like it was ignored and we were just given two 'fry ups'. This is not really ideal as there were reasons for each of us omitting certain items.
Kind Regards
Paul Sheffield

My husband and I had a lovely stay in your hotel in August. He had always wanted to visit the Isle of Man, so for his birthday I surprised him with a trip.... after 34 year of marriage I still think it is my job to make his dreams come through. You have a lovely hotel and I found the staff very helpful. We had a room overlooking the Atrium which was delightful. It was lovely to have a quiet moment on the balcony doing a crossword and having a cup of tea. I picked your hotel mainly because it has a swimming pool and I like to swim at least 3 times a week. However I was very disappointed to find the swimming pool was out of action for the whole of my stay. The staff did offer to arrange for me to use another pool but it would have been an inconvenience to have to carry all my gear to another venue. I went down each day in the hope that it had been fixed, to no avail. For location, comfort, cleanliness, and cuisine I cannot fault you so it is a pity about the pool.

I had a 2 night stay at the Sefton in August on business. I found the staff friendly and helpful. I had a room with a balcony overlooking the inside "garden", which is lovely place to sit and work - but a little echoey at night if you leave the windows open!
Breakfast was fantastic, and I had 1 very good meal in the restaurant.
The decor is a little tired, but overall I had an enjoyable stay, and will stay here again when business next takes me to Douglas.

Good location, friendly staff, although we tended to be out most days and therefore did not use the restauarant for dinner during our stay. Rooms were well appointed and cleaned every day to a very acceptable standard. We would recommend the hotel to anybody contemplating staying on the Isle of Mann

Having stayed in before we loved spaciousness of The Atrium rooms. We felt we were in the Mediteranean and it was a great place to come back to relax in after a days work.

Perfectly located in the islands capital, the Sefton Hotel is a luxurious 4 Star
hotel with unique features such as its Atrium Water Garden, Rosette Award Winning
Restaurant, Sefton spa, art gallery and secure guest underground car park.
The beautifully classic Victorian hotel has been fully refurbished and features
a new extension set around the unique water garden. The Water Garden helps to create
a relaxed atmosphere with elegant palm fronds and lily ponds, ferns and luxuriant
creepers and lush fountains. This is intrinsic to the ethos of the hotel, a conscious
rejection of the sealed windows, dry air and constant hum of many modern buildings.
Instead, create a fantastically soothing atmosphere and state-of-the-art technology
allows nature itself to dictate the optimum conditions for hotel guests and plants
alike.
Overlooking the Harris Promenade in Douglas, crafted from a more elegant age, the
Sefton now hides a fabulous new glass atrium.
You can now stay in new luxury rooms, designed for your comfort, all with French
windows opening onto balconies overlooking a beautiful water garden scene.
Contemporary hotel to its charms - and one with a most unusual interior!
